The Earth Spider Conjures Demons Ukiyo-e Poster
A restored print of Utagawa Kuniyoshi's 1843 woodblock of the legend of the earth spider (tsuchigumo). As the warrior Minamoto no Yorimitsu lies sick, the spider fills his mansion with a horde of demons, goblins and skulls, while his retainers carry on with their game of go below, unaware. It was famously read as a coded jab at the government of the day. This poster shows the centre sheet of the triptych, printed from a museum scan with the original woodblock grain and colours, and finished with the print's Japanese title, 源頼光公館土蜘作妖怪圖.
