Gallery Wall Layouts with A5, A4 and A3 Posters (With Measurements)

Short answer: start with one A3 poster as the anchor, build out with A4 and A5 prints, and keep the same gap between every piece. Around 4 cm works well for small prints, and up to 5 cm for larger ones. Because A-sizes share the same proportions, mixed sizes line up neatly. An A5 turned landscape (21 cm wide) is exactly the width of an A4 in portrait.

Below are four layouts with measurements, a few theme pairings from our range, and a simple way to plan the wall before you put anything up.

The sizes you're working with

  • A5: 14.8 × 21 cm
  • A4: 21 × 29.7 cm
  • A3: 29.7 × 42 cm
  • A4 framed option: about 24 × 33 cm outer size (slim black frame, clear plastic front)

The poster size guide covers when each size works best. If you mix framed and unframed pieces, use the outer frame size in your measurements.

Four gallery wall layouts (with measurements)

1. A3 centre with four A5s

Hang one A3 in portrait in the middle, with two A5s stacked on each side. With 4 cm gaps, each A5 stack is 46 cm tall (21 + 4 + 21), so centre the 42 cm-tall A3 against it. Total: about 67 cm wide × 46 cm tall. This layout suits a statement piece flanked by smaller prints, such as a Red Dead Redemption 2 map with four Minecraft paintings.

2. Three A4s in a row

Hang three A4s in portrait side by side. With 4 cm gaps the row is 71 cm wide × 29.7 cm tall, or 73 cm wide with 5 cm gaps. It's the simplest layout to get right and works well above a desk, bed or sofa. Three-poster sets like the Naruto Manga Panel Poster Set x3 and the Dark Fantasy Skeleton Rider Set x3 are made for this.

3. Two A4s and four A5s

Make two columns. In each, place an A5 in landscape above and below an A4 in portrait. Since landscape A5 and portrait A4 are both 21 cm wide, the edges line up exactly. With 4 cm gaps, each column is 67.3 cm tall, and the pair is 46 cm wide × 67.3 cm tall. It's a good tall layout for a narrow wall or beside a door.

4. Staircase

Follow the line of the stairs with A4s or a mix of A4 and A3. Keep the same horizontal gap (around 5 cm) and step each print up by the same amount, so their centres sit on a line parallel to the handrail. Hang the first and last prints, then fill in between.

Mixing themes that work together

  • Minecraft paintings with dark fantasy: the pixel-art in-game paintings sit well next to the darker fantasy art Minecraft prints, such as the Wither, Herobrine and Creeper.
  • Anime panels with Studio Ghibli: pair black-and-white Naruto manga panels with the colour of Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle. You can browse more in anime posters.
  • Maps as anchors: a map poster from our maps collection makes a strong A3 centrepiece for a gaming wall.

To keep a mixed wall looking deliberate, repeat one thing across every piece: the same gap, a shared colour, or matching black frames.

Plan it with paper templates

  1. Cut paper to the size of each print. Newspaper or wrapping paper is fine.
  2. Stick the templates to the wall with masking tape or low-tack tape and adjust them until the gaps look even.
  3. Step back and check from across the room. Photograph it if you're comparing options.
  4. Swap each template for its poster one at a time.

If you'd rather not drill, use removable adhesive strips or poster putty rated for the weight and suitable for your wall's surface. Test a small, hidden area first on painted walls.

Gallery wall FAQ

How big should the gaps be?

Around 3–5 cm. The most important thing is keeping the gap the same throughout.

How high should a gallery wall be?

A common guide is to put the centre of the whole arrangement at about eye level, roughly 145–155 cm from the floor. Above furniture, leave around 20–25 cm between the furniture and the lowest print.

Can I mix framed and unframed posters?

Yes. Our framed option is A4 only, in a slim black frame about 24 × 33 cm, so plan with that outer size. A5 and A3 prints are sold unframed and fit standard A5 and A3 frames. Our A4 framing guide has the details.

How do the posters arrive?

Unframed prints are sent flat in protective bubble envelopes. Orders are dispatched within 1–2 working days, and UK standard delivery is free on orders £20+ (after discounts). £2.99 under £20.
